Spring break is fast approaching, and Mexico is one of the most popular hotspots for U.S. travelers looking to get away to the sunshine.
It’s easy to see why. Mexico offers the perfect combination of white sand beaches, vibrant nightlife, fascinating culture, and accommodation options to suit all budgets.
But even in paradise, it’s important to stay safe and take sensible precautions to protect yourself.
This is especially true in Mexico, where U.S. travelers are advised to either do not travel or reconsider travel in certain states.
The U.S. Embassy has issued a new alert for American travelers who are visiting Mexico for spring break this year, urging them to be alert and travel smart.
Here’s what you need to know:
Be Alert To The Risk of Crime
Crime, including violent crime, can and does occur in Mexico just as it does everywhere in the world.
To minimize the risk of crime, U.S. citizens are advised to exercise caution when visiting the downtown areas of Mexico’s most popular spring break spots.
This includes Cancun, Tulum, and Playa Del Carmen. You should remain cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times, but especially at night.
Unfortunately, U.S. citizens have been victims of rape and sexual assault during their time in Mexico.
Those individuals who are drunk or on drugs that have altered their physical and mental state are more vulnerable and, therefore, at greater risk.
Just Say No To Drugs
There’s nothing wrong with letting your hair down, but don’t let illegal drug use be a part of your vacation. The consequences could be significant.
The U.S. Embassy statement reminds us that “drug possession and use, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico and may result in a lengthy jail sentence.”
It’s also worth noting that severe illness or death can be caused by using synthetic drugs or fake prescription drugs acquired in Mexico. Counterfeit medication is common, and this can be both dangerous and ineffective.
If you do need to buy prescription medication, only use a reputable pharmacy. It’s just not worth the risk.
Only Drink Reputable Alcohol
Unregulated alcohol can be a problem in Mexic,o and it poses a risk to life.
Unregulated alcohol can be contaminated, and American citizens have reported losing consciousness or being injured as a result of ingesting tainted alcohol.
Stay Safe in The Water
If you’re unfamiliar with swimming in open water, then you need to know that some beaches in Mexico can have strong currents and rip tides. Swimming conditions can change very quickly.
Some beaches in Mexico may lack lifeguards or adequate warning signs. So stay safe in the sea and consider sticking to only manned beaches.
Know What To Do In An Emergency
It’s worth planning ahead and knowing what to do in an emergency.
You should also ensure that you secure adequate medical insurance before you travel.
Private hospital prices can be higher in Mexico than in the U.S. and may require upfront payment.
Knowing what to do in case of an illness or accident that requires medical treatment and ensuring you are protected is important for safety and for peace of mind.
Confirm the costs of your medical treatment in advance where possible. And look for an insurance coverage plan that also covers medical evacuation.
Stay on the Right Side of the Law
It’s worth knowing the local laws and customs during your time in Mexico and ensuring you stay on the right side of the law.
Some examples of laws that might apply to spring breakers are that it’s illegal to be drunk and disorderly, to urinate in public, or to have open alcohol containers in a moving vehicle.
If you break the law in Mexico, you can be arrested and face either a jail term or a hefty fine.
On the subject of financial penalties, if you violate the immigration terms of your stay in Mexico then this could also result in a fine or even in detention.
It is also illegal to bring a gun or ammunition (even a very small amount) into Mexico with you. The penalty for this is much greater and can lead to a lengthy jail term.
