Weather is one of the top selling points this time of year when it comes to choosing your next vacay.

What better place to visit than a city rich in culture, serving up the state’s best eats and Texas-sized margaritas all while exploring the historic streets in the 60 – 70 degree temps?

Austin may steal all the shine nowadays, but another bustling city an hour south is just as enticing without the college crowds of world-famous 6th Street and former West Coasters taking part in the “California exodus”.

San Antonio is a city so rich in culture that it could easily be mistaken for Mexico in some parts, while others see trendy neighborhoods popping up with modern food halls, industrial breweries, and delightful cafes.

Texas meets Mexico in this underrated city perfect for a winter escape, and best of all you can score great deals treating yourself to luxury in one of many high-end stays.

A Year-Round Fiesta

Vibrant decor inside Mi Tierra (San Antonio)

You don’t have to experience the often unsightly chaos of 6th Street as Austin has soared in popularity; there are more options in South Texas to enjoy ice-cold cervezas and margs on a breezy patio instead of jam-packed bars of the next generation of TikTokers (if that’s still a thing).

San Antonio is a great place to let loose, especially in one of the most unique downtowns in America.

While not exactly oozing Venice vibes, the man-made canals of San Antonio’s River Walk are wonderful to peruse any time of day, but especially at night when you can find numerous Mexican restaurants serving up a warm bowl of queso to offset the brisk winter nights and must-have cocktails like my go-to spot for decades, Casa Rio.

Boat ride in San Antonio River Walk

Stretching 15 miles in length, 5 of those miles cover downtown, making for a great base to experience many of San Antonio’s attractions.

One of my favorites is Tower of the Americas, which is essentialy the city’s version of the Space Needle.

The River Walk and surrounding streets are always abuzz with something, whether it be a lively Tex-Mex bar and restaurant, mariachi performers, or tourists lining up for a fun boat ride along the river.

Beaming With History

The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

One such place not to miss is Market Square, another of my faves, offering artisan crafts, savory snacks, and an atmosphere so vibrant and reminiscent of Old Mexico.

But, diving deeper into history, if there’s one place you surely don’t need me to tell you about, it’s gotta be the Alamo, still standing strong and open to the public in the middle of downtown.

Some other gems historic gems you may not know of are a bit more of a journey to reach but well worth it!

Located 15 minutes from the Alamo, Missions National Historical Park is free to enter and is something you’d expect to see in Europe or deep Mexico.

Colorful street in San Antonio, Texas

The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas is a must-visit, showcasing how the 1700’s “Texans” settled here.

Historic in other facets is King William Historic District, lined with rows of eye-popping homes. ranging from Victorian-style to Greek Revival; something you might expect to see in the deep South’s array of small towns, but not a major city.

Best of all, you can stay in some of these historic homes converted into inns and bed & breakfasts like King William Manor.

Upscale Wallet-Friendly Stays

San Antonio, Texas

Name another city you can score a DoubleTree for $60 per night. Still thinking?

Let your mind rest and just come to San Antonio, where you can book incredible deals this winter.

Not only are there great rates at hotels, but also comfortable Airbnb’s. You can easily find similar rates with more space than the traditional four walls a hotel has to offer.

Sticking with hotels, however, these 3 luxury hotels are under $100 per night in February:

The Westin San Antonio North

Hilton San Antonio Hill Country

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Antonio Downtown

The Crockett Hotel in San Antonio

Although, I highly recommend The Crockett Hotel. I’ve been staying at this more-than-a-century old hotel off and on for years and it has never disappointed.

Conveniently located next to The Alamo and within walking distance to the River Walk, don’t forget to cash in on your ‘welcome cocktails’ at their very own bar to start your trip off right.
