Zermatt offers the perfect getaway for travellers looking for a combination of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re seeking an active vacation or simply want to unwind in a tranquil, cozy setting, this picturesque village strikes the perfect balance, with opportunities for skiing, shopping, wellness, and indulgent culinary experiences.

Getting to Zermatt

There are no cars in Zermatt,  which limits both environmental and noise pollutants, so the only real option to get there is by train. Depending on where you are coming from, you can take the famous Glacier Express or an SBB train. Both are very comfortable and easy to navigate—and, best of all, prompt! They both also have amazing views of the Swiss countryside along the way.

Once you arrive at the train station, most hotels have little electric carts that will come pick you up and take you to your lodging. However, if not, everything is very close together so walking is feasible in most cases and there are always plenty of taxis available as well.

Where to Stay

There are tons of options in Zermatt that offer incredible amenities designed to put the mind and body at ease. Hotel Bellerive is a great and affordable boutique hotel option that has rooms with heated floors and private balconies which overlook the famous mountain.

Additionally, breakfast is included in nightly rates, which have options such as locally sourced cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables (which can also be juiced), and, of course, made-to-order omelets. After a day of outdoor activities, the hotel’s sauna and jacuzzi are the perfect way to unwind and soothe tired muscles.

There is no shortage of other hotels in the area with similar amenities and accommodations. Hotel Julen, Cervo Mountain Resort, and Hotel Beausite are all great options offering travellers a cozy escape in the winter wonderland that is Zermatt.

Food & Beverage in Zermatt

The food in Zermatt is as fresh and nourishing as the mountain air. Much of the produce comes from neighbouring Alpine villages, ensuring that your meals are filled with the wholesome flavours of the region. Zermatt’s culinary scene is diverse, drawing influences from Italy, France, and Germany, making it a melting pot of rich and comforting dishes.

All the food is incredible, and visitors get to try a variety of different culture’s food as Zermatt is a destination which converges several different types of nationalities, including Italian, French and German. We tried the Pumpkin Ravioli and Filet from Le Gitan, fondu from Whymper Stube and lamb from Restaurant Julen. There were also several cozy bars along the main street. Two standouts are Elsie’s Wine Bar and Hexenbar.

Activities and Relaxation in Zermatt

Zermatt is a paradise for those seeking an active vacation. Skiing is the primary draw, with world-class slopes that cater to all levels. For more experienced skiers, the challenge of skiing to Italy for lunch and returning to Zermatt is an unforgettable experience. But skiing isn’t the only option. There is also tubing, sledding, glacier hikes, and dog sledding tours amidst these awe-inspiring landscapes.

For those seeking a more laid-back experience, Zermatt offers wellness activities to recharge both the body and soul. Take a leisurely walk through the village, soaking in the crisp mountain air and the panoramic views of the towering Alps. Visit the Gornergrat, accessible by train, for breathtaking vistas and a meal or a drink at the summit.

Finally, there are many wellness services throughout the area designed to help you relax and take advantage of the healing energy of the Alps. Visit the Omnia spa for personalized body treatments, yoga and pilates classes, and hydrotherapy.
